In a new interview with Genius, “Butter” co-writer Jenna Andrews can’t stop whining about how impressive RM’s BTS music production talent is.
BTS’s latest No.1 Billboard ḧïẗ “Butter” is the brainchild of several musicians, including leader RM and a Canadian musician named Jenna Andrews. When Genius asked Andrews if he was interested in working with RM, she had nothing but praise for the self-produced star.
“RM really doesn’t get enough credit for his world-class executive production talent,” Andrews began. She went on to share that many non-fans don’t know how influential he was in making BTS the group they are today, working behind the scenes to guide their sound in while working as an artist on her own. Even when BTS received the demo, Andrews said they weren’t “really finished” until the rap parts had been tweaked to perfectly fit BTS’s vision.
But, Andrews continued, it’s not just the sound of BTS that RM has led — it’s also “music and pop culture at the highest levels”. According to the musician, every musical decision RM makes (most of which aren’t even made public) has an impact on the broader entertainment sector. Jenna Andrews also went on to point to RM’s key strengths, including his ability to bring out the best in his bandmates and his ability to mix languages and cultures when it comes to songwriting. In her view, RM has a “superhuman level of professionalism and talent“ – somєthing ARMYs can certainly agree on. She added: “He’s so humble when speaking on his contributions too.”
Of course, as fans know, production isn’t all that RM excels at. Andrews continues to build on his skílls as an artist, including the “incredible” character of his voice and the “identifiable tone” that always stands out. As a vocal producer, she revealed that RM’s voice is the one that “make any vocal producer happy”.
Responding Genius’s question more directly, Jenna Andrews shared that RM’s song lyrics and arrangement changes shaped the demo’s theme and performance potential into what the co-writers had originally hoped for. She also revealed a part of the song that was all BTS’s concept — the “cherry-on-top” outro rap, which Andrews says made a world of difference for the end of track.
“BTS made ‘Butter’ everything I thought it could be when I first heard Stephen’s melody and more” – Jenna Andrews said after all.
