The countdown timer turns on as BTS’s new English single release — “Butter” — comes closer than ever. Before releasing on May 21, HYBE released the first “Concept Clip – Teaser Poster” for the new song, and ARMYs have been working hard to come up with theories ever since. Here are the most interesting theories about “Butter” we’ve been waiting for:
1. “Butter” continues “Run”.
One of the most popular theories right now is that “Butter” will be a sequel to “Run” and it’s easy to see why. Released in 2015, The Most Beautiful Moment In Life Pt.2 is accompanied by a seven-minute music video with a memorable home party scene.
Similarly, the new teaser image also brings a sense of serious partying. From balloons to confetti to cocktails, it’s not hard to imagine pictures of Polaroids on a frenetic night. As a result, some fans claim that the “Butter” music video could have a party later – or the aftermath of the original “Run” party.
2. “Butter” scans BTS’s memory
Another theory calls back BTS’s past, but in a different way. Some ARMY with eagle eyes have noticed that the yellow balloons with the smiley face doodle on them look like the ones BTS blew for their first anniversary party back in a 2014 BTS clip.
As a result, some fans are speculating that BTS might be reminiscing about their old days in the music video “Butter” – maybe even wishing they could go back to a simpler time.
3. “Butter” represents BTS’ stardom
Similar to both the above hypotheses, another ARMY suggested that “Butter” could be a home party as a metaphor for becoming a superstar. According to this theory, BTS may find themselves waking up from a frenetic party trying to recall what happened the night before – hence photographic evidence for their antics. In turn, this could represent BTS trying to understand how they unexpectedly became superstars.
4. “Butter” has a dark color tone
Others argue that “Butter” can be a darker tone than a nostalgic tone. The press release revealed that “Butter” will be “a dance pop song filled with BTS’s smooth yet charismatic charm”, so ARMYs knew that the song itself would be light and fun. However, judging on the original teaser image, some people think that maybe the upbeat musical instrument part will contrast with the dark meaning in the lyrics.
5. “Butter” features a crime scene

Notably, another popular “Butter” theory suggests that the images in the trailer could be crime scene photos. Ideas for crimes can range from harmless crimes like stealing butter to serious crimes like murder with weapons. Either way, ARMYs who believe in this theory assume the photos in the teaser are a clue to who the culprit is.
6. RM’s abs melts butter
In the morning, BTS eating their breakfast with butter and wondering what the hell happened last night and then rip his shirt off and melt the butter with his abs? Yeah, sounds legit.
